Non-Coding RNAs in Kidney Diseases: The Long and Short of Them. Int J Mol Sci. 2021 Jun 4;22(11):6077http://hdl.handle.net/10668/4599Recent progress in genomic research has highlighted the genome to be much more transcribed than expected. The formerly so-called junk DNA encodes a miscellaneous group of largely unknown RNA transcripts, which contain the long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) family. lncRNAs are instrumental in gene regulation. Moreover, understanding their biological roles in the physiopathology of many diseases, including renal, is a new challenge. lncRNAs regulate the effects of microRNAs (miRNA) on mRNA expression. Understanding the complex crosstalk between lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA is one of the main challenges of modern molecular biology. This review aims to summarize the role of lncRNA on kidney diseases, the molecular mechanisms involved, and their function as emerging prognostic biomarkers for both acute and chronic kidney diseases. Finally, we will also outline new therapeutic opportunities to diminish renal injury by targeting lncRNA with antisense oligonucleotides.enAtribución 4.0 Internacionalhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Non-coding RNAMicroRNALong non-coding RNAChronic kidney diseaseAcute kidney diseaseIgA nephropathyGene regulationARN no traducidoMicroARNsARN largo no codificanteInsuficiencia renal crónicaEnfermedades renalesGlomerulonefritis por IgARegulación de la expresión génicaMedical Subject Headings::Organisms::Eukaryota::AnimalsMedical Subject Headings::Organisms::Eukaryota::Animals::Chordata::Vertebrates::Mammals::Primates::Haplorhini::Catarrhini::Hominidae::HumansMedical Subject Headings::Chemicals and Drugs::Nucleic Acids, Nucleotides, and Nucleosides::Nucleic Acids::RNA::RNA, Untranslated::RNA, Long NoncodingMedical Subject Headings::Chemicals and Drugs::Nucleic Acids, Nucleotides, and Nucleosides::Nucleic Acids::RNA::RNA, MessengerMedical Subject Headings::Diseases::Male Urogenital Diseases::Urologic Diseases::Kidney Diseases::Renal Insufficiency::Renal Insufficiency, ChronicMedical Subject Headings::Phenomena and Processes::Genetic Phenomena::Genetic Processes::Gene Expression RegulationMedical Subject Headings::Chemicals and Drugs::Nucleic Acids, Nucleotides, and Nucleosides::Antisense Elements (Genetics)::Oligonucleotides, AntisenseMedical Subject Headings::Phenomena and Processes::Genetic Phenomena::Genetic Structures::Genome::Genome Components::DNA, IntergenicMedical Subject Headings::Disciplines and Occupations::Natural Science Disciplines::Biological Science Disciplines::Biology::Computational Biology::GenomicsMedical Subject Headings::Diseases::Male Urogenital Diseases::Urologic Diseases::Kidney DiseasesMedical Subject Headings::Diseases::Female Urogenital Diseases and Pregnancy Complications::Female Urogenital Diseases::Urologic Diseases::Kidney DiseasesMedical Subject Headings::Chemicals and Drugs::Biological Factors::Biological MarkersMedical Subject Headings::Analytical, Diagnostic and Therapeutic Techniques and Equipment::TherapeuticsNon-Coding RNAs in Kidney Diseases: The Long and Short of Themreview article34199920open access10.3390/ijms221160771422-0067PMC8200121
