High MICs for Vancomycin and Daptomycin and Complicated Catheter-Related Bloodstream Infections with Methicillin-Sensitive Staphylococcus aureus. Emerging Infect Dis. 2016; 22(6):1057-661080-6040http://hdl.handle.net/10668/2534Journal Article; We investigated the prognostic role of high MICs for antistaphylococcal agents in patients with methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus catheter-related bloodstream infection (MSSA CRBSI). We prospectively reviewed 83 episodes from 5 centers in Spain during April 2011-June 2014 that had optimized clinical management and analyzed the relationship between E-test MICs for vancomycin, daptomycin, oxacillin, and linezolid and development of complicated bacteremia by using multivariate analysis. Complicated MSSA CRBSI occurred in 26 (31.3%) patients; MICs for vancomycin and daptomycin were higher in these patients (optimal cutoff values for predictive accuracy = 1.5 μg/mL and 0.5 μg/mL). High MICs for vancomycin (hazard ratio 2.4, 95% CI 1.2-5.5) and daptomycin (hazard ratio 2.4, 95% CI 1.1-5.9) were independent risk factors for development of complicated MSSA CRBSI. Our data suggest that patients with MSSA CRBSI caused by strains that have high MICs for vancomycin or daptomycin are at increased risk for complications.enCRBIMICMSSAbacteriaCatheter-related bloodstream infectionComplicated bacteremiaDaptomycinMethicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureusSeptic thrombophlebitisVancomycinBacteriemiaInfecciones relacionadas con catéteresDaptomicinaMeticilinaAnálisis multivarianteOxacilinaVancomicinaMedical Subject Headings::Diseases::Bacterial Infections and Mycoses::Bacterial Infections::BacteremiaMedical Subject Headings::Diseases::Bacterial Infections and Mycoses::Infection::Catheter-Related InfectionsMedical Subject Headings::Chemicals and Drugs::Polycyclic Compounds::Macrocyclic Compounds::Peptides, Cyclic::DaptomycinMedical Subject Headings::Organisms::Eukaryota::Animals::Chordata::Vertebrates::Mammals::Primates::Haplorhini::Catarrhini::Hominidae::HumansMedical Subject Headings::Chemicals and Drugs::Organic Chemicals::Amides::Lactams::beta-Lactams::Penicillins::MethicillinMedical Subject Headings::Analytical, Diagnostic and Therapeutic Techniques and Equipment::Diagnosis::Diagnostic Techniques and Procedures::Clinical Laboratory Techniques::Microbiological Techniques::Microbial Sensitivity TestsMedical Subject Headings::Analytical, Diagnostic and Therapeutic Techniques and Equipment::Investigative Techniques::Epidemiologic Methods::Statistics as Topic::Analysis of Variance::Multivariate AnalysisMedical Subject Headings::Chemicals and Drugs::Organic Chemicals::Amides::Lactams::beta-Lactams::Penicillins::OxacillinMedical Subject Headings::Analytical, Diagnostic and Therapeutic Techniques and Equipment::Investigative Techniques::Epidemiologic Methods::Statistics as Topic::Probability::Risk::Risk FactorsMedical Subject Headings::Geographicals::Geographic Locations::Europe::SpainMedical Subject Headings::Diseases::Bacterial Infections and Mycoses::Bacterial Infections::Gram-Positive Bacterial Infections::Staphylococcal InfectionsMedical Subject Headings::Organisms::Bacteria::Endospore-Forming Bacteria::Gram-Positive Endospore-Forming Bacteria::Gram-Positive Endospore-Forming Rods::Staphylococcaceae::Staphylococcus::Staphylococcus aureusMedical Subject Headings::Chemicals and Drugs::Carbohydrates::Glycoconjugates::Glycopeptides::VancomycinHigh MICs for Vancomycin and Daptomycin and Complicated Catheter-Related Bloodstream Infections with Methicillin-Sensitive Staphylococcus aureus.research article27192097open access10.3201/eid2206.1517091080-6059PMC4880091
