Confabulation in schizophrenia: a neuropsychological study. J Int Neuropsychol Soc. 2010 Nov; 16(6):1018-261355-6177http://hdl.handle.net/10668/725Journal Article; Research Support, Non-U.S. Gov't;Confabulation has been documented in schizophrenia, but its neuropsychological correlates appear to be different from those of confabulation in neurological disease states. Forty-five schizophrenic patients and 37 controls were administered a task requiring them to recall fables. They also underwent testing with a range of memory and executive tasks. The patients with schizophrenia produced significantly more confabulations than the controls. After correcting for multiple comparisons, confabulation was not significantly associated with memory impairment, and was associated with impairment on only one of eight executive measures, the Brixton Test. Confabulation scores were also associated with impairment on two semantic memory tests. Confabulation was correlated with intrusion errors in recall, but not false positive errors in a recognition task. The findings suggest that confabulation in schizophrenia is unrelated to the episodic memory impairment seen in the disorder. However, the association with a circumscribed deficit in executive function could be consistent with a defective strategic retrieval account of confabulation similar to that of Moscovitch and co-workers, interacting with defective semantic memory.enSchizophreniaConfabulationIntrusion errorsEpisodic memoryExecutive dysfunctionSemantic memory dysfunctionEsquizofreniaConfusiónMemoria EpisódicaFunción EjecutivaTrastornos de la MemoriaSemánticaMedical Subject Headings::Psychiatry and Psychology::Behavior and Behavior Mechanisms::Neurobehavioral Manifestations::ConfusionMedical Subject Headings::Psychiatry and Psychology::Psychological Phenomena and Processes::Mental Processes::Executive FunctionMedical Subject Headings::Check Tags::FemaleMedical Subject Headings::Organisms::Eukaryota::Animals::Chordata::Vertebrates::Mammals::Primates::Haplorhini::Catarrhini::Hominidae::HumansMedical Subject Headings::Check Tags::MaleMedical Subject Headings::Psychiatry and Psychology::Behavior and Behavior Mechanisms::Neurobehavioral Manifestations::Memory DisordersMedical Subject Headings::Named Groups::Persons::Age Groups::Adult::Middle AgedMedical Subject Headings::Health Care::Environment and Public Health::Public Health::Epidemiologic Methods::Statistics as Topic::Analysis of Variance::Multivariate AnalysisMedical Subject Headings::Psychiatry and Psychology::Behavioral Disciplines and Activities::Psychological Tests::Neuropsychological TestsMedical Subject Headings::Psychiatry and Psychology::Mental Disorders::Schizophrenia and Disorders with Psychotic Features::SchizophreniaMedical Subject Headings::Information Science::Information Science::Communication::Language::Linguistics::SemanticsMedical Subject Headings::Health Care::Environment and Public Health::Public Health::Epidemiologic Methods::Statistics as TopicMedical Subject Headings::Psychiatry and Psychology::Psychological Phenomena and Processes::Mental Processes::Learning::Verbal LearningMedical Subject Headings::Health Care::Health Services Administration::Patient Care Management::Comprehensive Health Care::Primary Health Care::Continuity of Patient Care::Transition to Adult CareConfabulation in schizophrenia: a neuropsychological study.research article20630120open access10.1017/S13556177100007181469-7661
