Current Status of Angiogenic Cell Therapy and Related Strategies Applied in Critical Limb Ischemia. Int J Mol Sci. 2021 Feb 26;22(5):2335http://hdl.handle.net/10668/3661Critical limb ischemia (CLI) constitutes the most severe form of peripheral arterial disease (PAD), it is characterized by progressive blockade of arterial vessels, commonly correlated to atherosclerosis. Currently, revascularization strategies (bypass grafting, angioplasty) remain the first option for CLI patients, although less than 45% of them are eligible for surgical intervention mainly due to associated comorbidities. Moreover, patients usually require amputation in the short-term. Angiogenic cell therapy has arisen as a promising alternative for these "no-option" patients, with many studies demonstrating the potential of stem cells to enhance revascularization by promoting vessel formation and blood flow recovery in ischemic tissues. Herein, we provide an overview of studies focused on the use of angiogenic cell therapies in CLI in the last years, from approaches testing different cell types in animal/pre-clinical models of CLI, to the clinical trials currently under evaluation. Furthermore, recent alternatives related to stem cell therapies such as the use of secretomes, exosomes, or even microRNA, will be also described.enAtribución 4.0 Internacionalhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Critical limb ischemiaNeovascularizationAngiogenesisArteriogenesisCell therapySecretomesAngiogenesisIsquemiaNeovascularizationTratamiento basado en trasplante de células y tejidosExtremidadesMedical Subject Headings::Organisms::Eukaryota::AnimalsMedical Subject Headings::Analytical, Diagnostic and Therapeutic Techniques and Equipment::Investigative Techniques::Epidemiologic Methods::Epidemiologic Study Characteristics as Topic::Clinical Trials as TopicMedical Subject Headings::Diseases::Animal Diseases::Disease Models, AnimalMedical Subject Headings::Anatomy::Body Regions::ExtremitiesMedical Subject Headings::Analytical, Diagnostic and Therapeutic Techniques and Equipment::Investigative Techniques::Genetic Techniques::Gene Transfer TechniquesMedical Subject Headings::Organisms::Eukaryota::Animals::Chordata::Vertebrates::Mammals::Primates::Haplorhini::Catarrhini::Hominidae::HumansMedical Subject Headings::Chemicals and Drugs::Amino Acids, Peptides, and Proteins::Peptides::Intercellular Signaling Peptides and ProteinsMedical Subject Headings::Diseases::Cardiovascular Diseases::Vascular Diseases::Myocardial IschemiaMedical Subject Headings::Diseases::Cardiovascular Diseases::Vascular Diseases::Peripheral Vascular DiseasesMedical Subject Headings::Phenomena and Processes::Circulatory and Respiratory Physiological Phenomena::Cardiovascular Physiological Phenomena::Cardiovascular Physiological Processes::Neovascularization, PhysiologicMedical Subject Headings::Analytical, Diagnostic and Therapeutic Techniques and Equipment::Surgical Procedures, Operative::Transplantation::Cell Transplantation::Stem Cell TransplantationCurrent Status of Angiogenic Cell Therapy and Related Strategies Applied in Critical Limb Ischemiareview article33652743Acceso abierto10.3390/ijms220523351422-0067PMC7956816
