In November 2006, a consensus meeting aimed at reaching a common specialist statement on the treatment of brucellosis was held in Ioannina, Greece under the auspices of the International Society of Chemotherapy and the Institute of Continuing Medical Education of Ioannina. The author panel suggests that the optimal treatment of uncomplicated brucellosis should be based on a six-week regimen of doxycycline combined either with streptomycin for 2–3 weeks, or rifampicin for six weeks. Gentamicin may be considered an acceptable alternative to streptomycin, while all other regimens/combinations should be considered second-line. The development of a common global therapeutic language for human brucellosis, and future, properly conducted clinical trials would definitely solve controversies regarding the disease.enIraqi patientsCotrimoxazoleEfficacyMetaanalysisAnimalesAntibacterianosInvestigación BiomédicaBrucelosisPaíses en DesarrolloDoxiciclinaCombinación de MedicamentosResistencia a MedicamentosQuimioterapiaFluoroquinolonasGentamicinasAdhesión a DirectrizHistoria del Siglo XXIHumanosRecurrenciaEstreptomicinaTerminología como AsuntoResultado del TratamientoCombinación Trimetoprim-SulfametoxazolSalud MundialOrganización Mundial de la SaludMedical Subject Headings::Chemicals and Drugs::Chemical Actions and Uses::Pharmacologic Actions::Therapeutic Uses::Anti-Infective Agents::Anti-Bacterial AgentsMedical Subject Headings::Disciplines and Occupations::Natural Science Disciplines::Science::Research::Biomedical ResearchMedical Subject Headings::Diseases::Bacterial Infections and Mycoses::Bacterial Infections::Gram-Negative Bacterial Infections::BrucellosisMedical Subject Headings::Disciplines and Occupations::Social Sciences::Internationality::International Cooperation::Developing CountriesMedical Subject Headings::Chemicals and Drugs::Organic Chemicals::Hydrocarbons::Hydrocarbons, Cyclic::Hydrocarbons, Aromatic::Polycyclic Hydrocarbons, Aromatic::Naphthacenes::Tetracyclines::DoxycyclineMedical Subject Headings::Chemicals and Drugs::Pharmaceutical Preparations::Drug CombinationsMedical Subject Headings::Phenomena and Processes::Microbiological Phenomena::Drug Resistance, MicrobialMedical Subject Headings::Analytical, Diagnostic and Therapeutic Techniques and Equipment::Therapeutics::Drug Therapy::Drug Therapy, CombinationMedical Subject Headings::Chemicals and Drugs::Heterocyclic Compounds::Heterocyclic Compounds, 2-Ring::Quinolines::Quinolones::FluoroquinolonesMedical Subject Headings::Chemicals and Drugs::Carbohydrates::Glycosides::Aminoglycosides::GentamicinsMedical Subject Headings::Chemicals and Drugs::Carbohydrates::Glycosides::Aminoglycosides::GentamicinsMedical Subject Headings::Humanities::Humanities::History::History, Modern 1601-::History, 21st CenturyMedical Subject Headings::Organisms::Eukaryota::Animals::Chordata::Vertebrates::Mammals::Primates::Haplorhini::Catarrhini::Hominidae::HumansMedical Subject Headings::Diseases::Pathological Conditions, Signs and Symptoms::Pathologic Processes::Disease Attributes::RecurrenceMedical Subject Headings::Chemicals and Drugs::Heterocyclic Compounds::Heterocyclic Compounds with 4 or More Rings::Rifamycins::RifampinMedical Subject Headings::Chemicals and Drugs::Carbohydrates::Glycosides::Aminoglycosides::StreptomycinMedical Subject Headings::Information Science::Information Science::Communication::Language::Linguistics::Terminology as TopicMedical Subject Headings::Analytical, Diagnostic and Therapeutic Techniques and Equipment::Diagnosis::Prognosis::Treatment OutcomeMedical Subject Headings::Chemicals and Drugs::Heterocyclic Compounds::Heterocyclic Compounds, 1-Ring::Pyrimidines::Trimethoprim::Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole CombinationMedical Subject Headings::Health Care::Population Characteristics::Health::World HealthMedical Subject Headings::Health Care::Health Care Economics and Organizations::Organizations::International Agencies::United Nations::World Health OrganizationMedical Subject Headings::Organisms::Eukaryota::AnimalsPerspectives for the treatment of brucellosis in the 21st century: the Ioannina recommendationsresearch article18162038open access10.1371/journal.pmed.00403171549-1676PMC2222927
