Effect of a specific supplement enriched with n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids on markers of inflammation, oxidative stress and metabolic status of ear, nose and throat cancer patients. Oncol. Rep.. 2014; 31(1):405-141021-335Xhttp://hdl.handle.net/10668/1853Journal Article; Research Support, Non-U.S. Gov't;Malnutrition affects 40-50% of patients with ear, nose and throat (ENT) cancer. The aim of this study was to assess changes induced by a specific nutritional supplement enriched with n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, fiber and greater amounts of proteins and electrolytes, as compared with a standard nutritional supplement, on markers of inflammation, oxidative stress and metabolic status of ENT cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy (RT). Fourteen days after starting RT, 26 patients were randomly allocated to one of two groups, 13 supplemented with Prosure, an oncologic formula enriched with n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, fiber and greater amounts of proteins and electrolytes (specific supplement), and 13 supplemented with Standard-Isosource (standard supplement). Patients were evaluated before RT, and 14, 28 and 90 days after starting RT. The results showed that there were no significant differences between the groups, but greater changes were observed in the standard supplement group, such as a decline in body mass index (BMI), reductions in hematocrit, erythrocyte, eosinophil and albumin levels, and a rise in creatinine and urea levels. We concluded that metabolic, inflammatory and oxidative stress parameters were altered during RT, and began to normalize at the end of the study. Patients supplemented with Prosure showed an earlier normalization of these parameters, with more favorable changes in oxidative stress markers and a more balanced evolution, although the difference was not significant.enMetabolic statusRadiotherapyIL6 protein, humanInterleukin-6Hydrogen Peroxiden-3 polyunsaturated fatty acidsOxidative stressInflammaationMetabolic statusSuplementos dietéticosNeoplasias del oídoElectrólitosÁcidos grasos insaturadosGlutatión peroxidasaPeróxido de hidrógenoInflamaciónInterleucina-6DesnutriciónNeoplasias nasaleEstrés oxidativoNeoplasias FaríngeasAntioxidantesÍndice de masa corporalProteína C-reactivaFibras en la dietaMedical Subject Headings::Chemicals and Drugs::Biological Factors::Biological MarkersMedical Subject Headings::Analytical, Diagnostic and Therapeutic Techniques and Equipment::Diagnosis::Diagnostic Techniques and Procedures::Physical Examination::Body Constitution::Body Weights and Measures::Body Mass IndexMedical Subject Headings::Chemicals and Drugs::Amino Acids, Peptides, and Proteins::Proteins::Albumins::C-Reactive ProteinMedical Subject Headings::Technology, Industry, Agriculture::Food and Beverages::Food::Dietary FiberMedical Subject Headings::Technology, Industry, Agriculture::Food and Beverages::Food::Dietary SupplementsMedical Subject Headings::Diseases::Neoplasms::Neoplasms by Site::Head and Neck Neoplasms::Otorhinolaryngologic Neoplasms::Ear NeoplasmsMedical Subject Headings::Chemicals and Drugs::Inorganic Chemicals::ElectrolytesMedical Subject Headings::Chemicals and Drugs::Lipids::Fatty Acids::Fatty Acids, UnsaturatedMedical Subject Headings::Check Tags::FemaleMedical Subject Headings::Chemicals and Drugs::Enzymes and Coenzymes::Enzymes::Oxidoreductases::Peroxidases::Glutathione PeroxidaseMedical Subject Headings::Organisms::Eukaryota::Animals::Chordata::Vertebrates::Mammals::Primates::Haplorhini::Catarrhini::Hominidae::HumansMedical Subject Headings::Chemicals and Drugs::Inorganic Chemicals::Electrolytes::Ions::Anions::Oxides::Peroxides::Hydrogen PeroxideMedical Subject Headings::Diseases::Pathological Conditions, Signs and Symptoms::Pathologic Processes::InflammationMedical Subject Headings::Chemicals and Drugs::Amino Acids, Peptides, and Proteins::Peptides::Intercellular Signaling Peptides and Proteins::Cytokines::Interleukins::Interleukin-6Medical Subject Headings::Check Tags::MaleMedical Subject Headings::Diseases::Nutritional and Metabolic Diseases::Nutrition Disorders::MalnutritionMedical Subject Headings::Named Groups::Persons::Age Groups::Adult::Middle AgedMedical Subject Headings::Diseases::Neoplasms::Neoplasms by Site::Head and Neck Neoplasms::Otorhinolaryngologic Neoplasms::Nose NeoplasmsMedical Subject Headings::Phenomena and Processes::Metabolic Phenomena::Metabolism::Oxidative StressMedical Subject Headings::Diseases::Neoplasms::Neoplasms by Site::Head and Neck Neoplasms::Otorhinolaryngologic Neoplasms::Pharyngeal NeoplasmsMedical Subject Headings::Chemicals and Drugs::Chemical Actions and Uses::Pharmacologic Actions::Molecular Mechanisms of Pharmacological Action::AntioxidantsEffect of a specific supplement enriched with n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids on markers of inflammation, oxidative stress and metabolic status of ear, nose and throat cancer patients.research article24154820open access10.3892/or.2013.28061791-2431
