Coenzyme Q10 and Cardiovascular Diseases. Antioxidants . 2021 Jun 3;10(6):906http://hdl.handle.net/10668/4265Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), which plays a key role in the electron transport chain by providing an adequate, efficient supply of energy, has another relevant function as an antioxidant, acting in mitochondria, other cell compartments, and plasma lipoproteins. CoQ10 deficiency is present in chronic and age-related diseases. In particular, in cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), there is a reduced bioavailability of CoQ10 since statins, one of the most common lipid-lowering drugs, inhibit the common pathway shared by CoQ10 endogenous biosynthesis and cholesterol biosynthesis. Different clinical trials have analyzed the effect of CoQ10 supplementation as a treatment to ameliorate these deficiencies in the context of CVDs. In this review, we focus on recent advances in CoQ10 supplementation and the clinical implications in the reduction of cardiovascular risk factors (such as lipid and lipoprotein levels, blood pressure, or endothelial function) as well as in a therapeutic approach for the reduction of the clinical complications of CVD.enAtribución 4.0 Internacionalhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Coenzyme Q10UbiquinoneUbiquinolCardiovascular diseasesCoenzimasUbiquinonaEnfermedades cardiovascularesFactores de riesgo de enfermedades cardíacasLipoproteínasMedical Subject Headings::Chemicals and Drugs::Chemical Actions and Uses::Pharmacologic Actions::Molecular Mechanisms of Pharmacological Action::AntioxidantsMedical Subject Headings::Chemicals and Drugs::Chemical Actions and Uses::Pharmacologic Actions::Molecular Mechanisms of Pharmacological Action::Antimetabolites::Hypolipidemic Agents::Anticholesteremic Agents::Hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA Reductase InhibitorsMedical Subject Headings::Diseases::Cardiovascular DiseasesMedical Subject Headings::Phenomena and Processes::Circulatory and Respiratory Physiological Phenomena::Cardiovascular Physiological Phenomena::Hemodynamics::Blood PressureMedical Subject Headings::Phenomena and Processes::Metabolic Phenomena::Pharmacokinetics::Biological AvailabilityMedical Subject Headings::Phenomena and Processes::Metabolic Phenomena::Metabolism::Energy Metabolism::Oxidation-Reduction::Electron TransportMedical Subject Headings::Analytical, Diagnostic and Therapeutic Techniques and Equipment::Investigative Techniques::Epidemiologic Methods::Statistics as Topic::Probability::Risk::Risk FactorsMedical Subject Headings::Anatomy::Cells::Cellular Structures::Intracellular Space::Cytoplasm::Cytoplasmic Structures::Organelles::MitochondriaMedical Subject Headings::Chemicals and Drugs::Lipids::LipoproteinsCoenzyme Q10 and Cardiovascular Diseasesreview article34205085open access10.3390/antiox100609062076-3921PMC8229886
