Abstract
The history of hypertension research is sweet sour. Hugeadvances have been marred by the persistence of hugeblack boxes. The term primary hypertension epitomizes theissue: the underlying causes and pathophysiology of mostcases of hypertension remain undefined. Furthermore, guide-line panels are unable to agree on desirable target blood pres-sure values, and it may be the time to think about the cure ofhypertension rather than just the control of blood pressure. The quote attributed to Einstein, “Insanity: doing the samething over and over again and expecting different results” mayprovide some clues. It is likely that the next large conceptualleaps in our understanding of hypertension are based on theapplication of a novel technology not previously used for thispurpose.
